Construction of India’s first high-speed rail corridor has reached another engineering milestone with the deployment of a second tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the undersea section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Rail project. The development marks a significant advancement in one of the country’s most technically demanding infrastructure projects and reinforces progress towards delivering a high-speed transport network connecting western India’s major economic centres.
The additional TBM has begun excavation on the undersea tunnel section near Mumbai, where complex geological conditions require advanced tunnelling technology and continuous monitoring. The tunnel forms a critical component of the Ahmedabad Bullet Rail corridor, enabling the high-speed alignment to pass beneath sensitive coastal areas while minimising disruption to existing urban infrastructure. Infrastructure specialists note that deploying multiple TBMs simultaneously improves construction efficiency by allowing parallel excavation activities. The approach is expected to accelerate tunnelling progress while maintaining stringent safety, precision and environmental standards required for underground construction beneath densely populated regions and marine ecosystems. The Ahmedabad Bullet Rail project spans approximately 508 kilometres and is designed to connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad through a dedicated high-speed rail corridor. Once operational, trains will travel at speeds of up to 320 kmph, significantly reducing travel time between the two metropolitan regions and strengthening economic integration across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Tunnel construction remains among the most challenging aspects of the project due to varying geological formations, groundwater management requirements and the need to protect surrounding infrastructure.
