Ahmedabad is moving closer to establishing one of India’s most comprehensive integrated transport centres as the Sabarmati Multimodal Hub takes shape alongside the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. Designed to bring together conventional rail, high-speed rail, metro and bus rapid transit services within a single interchange, the project reflects a growing emphasis on seamless urban mobility and sustainable infrastructure planning.
Spread across nearly 3.5 hectares, the Sabarmati Multimodal Hub has been planned as a unified transport gateway that minimises transfer time between different modes of travel. The development integrates Indian Railways, the under-construction high-speed rail station, Ahmedabad Metro and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), enabling passengers to move between services without leaving the terminal complex. Urban transport experts view integrated mobility hubs as essential infrastructure for rapidly expanding metropolitan regions. Rather than functioning as standalone railway stations, such facilities create interconnected transport ecosystems that encourage greater use of public transport while reducing dependence on private vehicles. Efficient interchanges also improve passenger convenience and strengthen the economic value of surrounding urban districts.
The Sabarmati Multimodal Hub has been designed with airport-style passenger facilities, including expansive concourse areas, retail spaces, food courts, waiting lounges and digital passenger services. Dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones, multi-level parking and barrier-free connectivity through escalators, lifts, foot overbridges and travelators aim to simplify passenger movement while improving accessibility for all users. Beyond transportation, the development incorporates commercial infrastructure such as office spaces, hospitality facilities, conference areas and other mixed-use components. Urban planners note that integrating commercial activity within transport hubs supports transit-oriented development, creating vibrant urban centres where mobility, business and public services coexist in a compact environment.
Sustainability has also been embedded into the project’s design. The facility has received an Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Gold Rating, reflecting the inclusion of energy-efficient lighting, solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and green building practices. These measures align with broader efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of major public infrastructure while improving operational efficiency over the long term. The project additionally incorporates public spaces and heritage-inspired design features that acknowledge Ahmedabad’s cultural identity. Such placemaking elements demonstrate how modern transport infrastructure can preserve local character while supporting contemporary urban development. As the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor progresses, the Sabarmati hub is expected to become one of the country’s most important multimodal gateways. Its success will depend not only on engineering execution but also on seamless operational integration, efficient passenger management and sustainable urban planning. If implemented effectively, the project could serve as a model for future multimodal transport hubs across India, supporting cleaner mobility, stronger regional connectivity and more resilient cities.
