Hyderabad Rail Link Cuts Travel Time Significantly
Hyderabad: A newly commissioned rail link between Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi is set to transform train operations in Hyderabad by reducing travel distance, easing congestion around Secunderabad Junction and improving network efficiency. The strategic rail corridor is expected to enhance connectivity for both long-distance passenger services and future suburban rail operations while strengthening the city’s growing transport infrastructure.
The Hyderabad chord rail line establishes a direct connection between Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi, enabling trains travelling from Kazipet towards Kacheguda to bypass the longer route through Moula Ali and Malkajgiri. The new alignment shortens the journey by around 12 kilometres and is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes for eligible services. In the initial phase, several long-distance trains have been scheduled to operate through the new corridor, improving operational efficiency while reducing pressure on one of South Central Railway’s busiest sections. By allowing trains to avoid Secunderabad Junction where possible, the project is expected to improve punctuality and reduce delays caused by congestion at critical rail intersections. The corridor comprises a combination of double-line and connecting track sections supported by modern railway infrastructure, including a rail-over-rail bridge, multiple minor bridges, a flyover and an automatic signalling system. Together, these improvements provide greater operational flexibility while increasing the network’s capacity to accommodate additional train services.
Transport experts believe the Hyderabad chord rail line represents an important investment in railway efficiency at a time when passenger demand and freight movement continue to increase across the region. Improved route optimisation not only shortens travel times but also enhances the utilisation of existing rail assets without requiring large-scale expansion of major stations. The project is also expected to create opportunities for expanding Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) services in the future. Urban mobility specialists note that strengthening suburban rail connectivity can encourage greater public transport use, helping reduce road congestion, lower emissions and support more sustainable commuting across Hyderabad. From a broader infrastructure perspective, the new rail link reinforces connectivity between major railway corridors serving Telangana, neighbouring states and southern India. Faster and more reliable rail operations can improve passenger convenience while supporting regional economic activity through more efficient transport links.
