Construction of India’s first high-speed rail corridor has entered another significant phase as underground tunnelling begins for the Mumbai section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, marking fresh progress towards improving connectivity between Ahmedabad and the country’s financial capital. The milestone reinforces the corridor’s strategic importance in transforming intercity mobility while strengthening western India’s economic integration.
The Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, spanning 508 kilometres, is India’s first dedicated high-speed railway and is expected to reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai to less than two hours. While civil works have progressed rapidly across Gujarat over the past year, the commencement of mechanised tunnelling beneath Mumbai represents one of the final complex engineering stages required to complete the corridor. The latest milestone involves the deployment of the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) from the Vikhroli launch shaft to construct a section of the 21-kilometre underground alignment leading towards Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The underground package also includes India’s first undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek, making it one of the country’s most technically advanced railway engineering projects. Infrastructure experts note that the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train is steadily evolving into a national benchmark for high-speed rail construction. Lessons from advanced tunnelling, ballastless track technology, digital signalling and resilient infrastructure systems are expected to guide future bullet train corridors planned across India.
The underground works are being executed using one of India’s largest Tunnel Boring Machines, measuring approximately 13.6 metres in diameter. Designed to excavate a single large tunnel carrying both tracks, the machine is expected to continue operations throughout the monsoon with sophisticated monitoring systems assessing ground movement, structural stability and surrounding infrastructure in real time. For Ahmedabad, the project’s steady progress carries wider economic implications beyond improved passenger mobility. Urban economists believe the corridor will strengthen business connectivity, support regional investment, encourage tourism and improve access between Gujarat’s industrial centres and Mumbai’s financial ecosystem. Faster rail connectivity is also expected to complement Ahmedabad’s expanding metro network and ongoing transit-oriented development around Sabarmati and other transport hubs.
Construction activities across Gujarat have already achieved significant milestones, including completion of multiple river bridges, steel bridge installations, station structures and viaduct segments. With underground excavation now accelerating in Maharashtra, the project is moving closer to integrating both ends of the high-speed corridor. Urban planners emphasise that high-speed rail can contribute to more sustainable transport by encouraging a shift from road and short-haul air travel to electrified rail systems with lower per-passenger emissions. However, they also stress that the long-term success of the corridor will depend on seamless multimodal integration, efficient last-mile connectivity and coordinated urban planning around stations. As excavation progresses beneath Mumbai, the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train project continues to move towards its planned operational timeline. For Ahmedabad, the corridor represents not only a transport upgrade but also a catalyst for regional economic growth, sustainable mobility and future-ready urban infrastructure.
