Ahmedabad: Western Railway has commissioned a new Integrated Control Centre in Ahmedabad, marking a significant step towards digitising railway operations across North Gujarat. Designed to centralise real-time monitoring and operational decision-making, the facility is expected to improve train punctuality, passenger services and network resilience while strengthening the region’s role in India’s evolving smart transport infrastructure.
The Ahmedabad Integrated Control Centre consolidates multiple railway operational functions within a single digital command facility, enabling coordinated management of passenger and freight services. Covering approximately 24,500 square feet, the centre has been developed to support faster decision-making by bringing together departments responsible for train movement, signalling, engineering, traction, crew management and operational logistics. Railway officials indicate that the facility will oversee the real-time movement of more than 130 passenger trains and over 160 freight trains operating daily across nearly 1,350 route kilometres. A large digital video display system provides continuous network visibility, allowing controllers to respond more quickly to operational disruptions, traffic congestion and infrastructure-related issues. Transport experts believe the Ahmedabad Integrated Control Centre reflects a broader transformation underway across India’s railway network, where digital technologies are increasingly being used to improve operational efficiency and service reliability. Integrated command systems reduce communication delays between departments, allowing railway operators to manage incidents more effectively while optimising train scheduling and network capacity.
