Delhi Police Issue New Year Eve Traffic Advisory Restrictions Diversions Parking Curbs

As Delhi prepares to usher in the New Year, the city’s traffic authorities have rolled out a comprehensive mobility plan to manage the surge in movement expected on the evening of 31 December. With thousands expected to converge at public landmarks and entertainment districts, the measures are designed to prioritise safety, reduce congestion and ensure smoother urban mobility during one of the busiest nights of the year.

Senior officials said the advisory reflects lessons from previous years, when unregulated vehicle movement and unsafe parking created bottlenecks and delayed emergency response. This year, traffic restrictions will focus on high-footfall zones such as Connaught Place and the India Gate precinct, areas that traditionally draw large crowds for celebrations. Additional personnel will be deployed across arterial corridors, market zones and transit hubs to monitor traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Connaught Place, one of Delhi’s most prominent public spaces, will see the strictest controls. From 7 pm onwards, vehicular movement will be restricted within the inner, middle and outer circles, with access limited to vehicles holding valid passes. Entry points leading towards Chelmsford Road and several surrounding intersections will be sealed to prevent overcrowding. Parking around the area will be limited and tightly monitored, with enforcement teams authorised to tow unauthorised vehicles to discourage roadside congestion.

Around India Gate, authorities are preparing for possible crowd surges that could prompt temporary closure of the central hexagon for vehicles. Given the limited parking capacity in the heritage zone, commuters have been strongly advised to rely on public transport. Traffic officials have also flagged potential congestion along Bhairon Road and stretches of Mathura Road near major attractions, urging motorists to avoid these corridors if possible. Beyond crowd management, the advisory places renewed emphasis on road safety. Police officials have warned that drunk driving checks will be intensified across the city, with zero tolerance for violations. A public outreach campaign featuring prominent voices has been launched to reinforce the message of responsible celebration, underscoring the social cost of reckless driving.

Urban mobility experts say such advisories are critical for a city of Delhi’s scale, particularly during peak events. Clear communication, predictable restrictions and a shift towards public transport help reduce emissions, improve safety and support more inclusive use of public spaces. “Temporary restrictions, when planned well, can make cities more liveable even during high-pressure moments,” an urban transport specialist noted. Commuters travelling to airports, railway stations or interstate bus terminals have been advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Officials stress that cooperation from citizens will be key to ensuring a safe, orderly and environmentally responsible start to the New Year one that reflects Delhi’s long-term push towards smarter, people-first urban mobility.
