Mumbai commuters can expect significant relief from overcrowding on local trains over the next five years as the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) embark on an ambitious capacity expansion plan. The Indian Railways aims to add 584 suburban services on CR and 165 on WR by 2030, alongside upgrades to long-distance operations, according to officials.
The expansion includes multiple infrastructure projects such as new terminals, additional platforms, upgraded pit lines, enhanced holding and stabling lines, and modernised maintenance facilities. These efforts are complemented by signalling improvements, traffic facility upgrades, and multi-tracking projects designed to streamline suburban operations. “These measures are aimed at reducing congestion while supporting the growing demand for sustainable urban mobility,” a senior railway official said. Currently, WR operates 1,406 suburban services and 44 long-distance trains from Mumbai, with plans to increase long-distance services to 65 and add approximately 70 coaches daily across existing trains. CR manages 1,820 suburban services and 82 long-distance trains, with authorities planning 30 new primary maintenance trains and 38 return services. Collectively, these initiatives are expected to introduce 749 additional services over the next five years.
Special attention is being given to the Harbour Line, where temporary service suspensions remain in effect to facilitate ongoing works. Down services from CSMT to Vashi, Belapur, and Panvel between 11:16 a.m. and 4:47 p.m., and CSMT to Bandra and Goregaon from 10:48 a.m. to 4:43 p.m., will continue to be suspended, along with corresponding Up services from the suburbs to CSMT during similar time windows. Authorities have assured commuters that these temporary measures will accelerate infrastructure readiness and long-term capacity improvements. Experts note that these expansions will not only improve daily commuting but also strengthen the city’s broader transport resilience, aligning with sustainable urban planning goals. The addition of modern maintenance infrastructure and enhanced stabling facilities will support more energy-efficient train operations and reduced operational delays, contributing to a cleaner and more reliable suburban transit network.
With Mumbai’s urban population projected to grow further, railways’ multi-pronged strategy seeks to balance commuter convenience with sustainable development objectives. “By upgrading infrastructure and increasing service frequency, the city can ensure equitable access to public transport while reducing carbon emissions,” said an urban mobility specialist. As CR and WR continue rolling out these projects, Mumbaikars can look forward to less crowded trains, improved travel experience, and a more resilient suburban network in line with zero-carbon and inclusive transport planning principles.
