Western Railway Schedules 30 Day Kandivali- Borivali Sections Maintenance Block From December 20

Western Railway has announced a 30-day block on the Kandivali–Borivali suburban section, starting the night of 20 December 2025 and continuing until 18 January 2026. The closure, aimed at facilitating the construction of the 6th line, will include major engineering, signalling, and overhead equipment works, affecting suburban, passenger, and Mail/Express services along this critical corridor.

According to an official from Western Railway, the work will primarily involve track slewing and the insertion and removal of multiple crossovers at Kandivali and Borivali stations. The 5th line will remain suspended for passenger operations, with speed restrictions imposed on other lines to ensure safety during the maintenance period. Trains that usually operate on the 5th line will be diverted to the Fast line between Andheri, Goregaon, and Borivali, which may lead to minor delays. Night blocks between 11.00 pm and 4.30 am will be implemented from 20/21 December to 25/26 December 2025. During these hours, some suburban services are expected to be cancelled. Passengers have been advised to check train schedules with station masters at all suburban stations. Special local services will operate on unaffected sections to maintain connectivity where possible.

Industry experts note that such long-term blocks, while inconvenient, are crucial for enhancing urban rail capacity and safety. The addition of the 6th line is expected to significantly improve service frequency and reduce congestion on one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban corridors. “Upgrading the suburban infrastructure is essential for sustainable mobility in a rapidly growing city,” a senior urban transport planner said. The ongoing engineering works also reflect broader efforts to modernise Mumbai’s suburban railway network. By integrating advanced signalling and track upgrades, Western Railway aims to enhance operational efficiency and passenger safety. These upgrades are aligned with the city’s long-term vision of resilient, eco-friendly urban mobility.

Commuters and local residents have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and anticipate minor delays. While the block will temporarily disrupt travel, the long-term benefits of increased capacity and safer travel are expected to outweigh the short-term inconveniences. Authorities emphasise that the project is a step toward building a more reliable and sustainable suburban transport network for Mumbai.
