Commuters using Pune Metro’s underground stations, including Swargate, Mandai, Kasba Peth, Civil Court, and Shivajinagar, have been encountering intermittent mobile and internet connectivity issues over the past two months. The disruptions, affecting online ticketing, digital payments, and communication, are emerging as a growing inconvenience for passengers, particularly during peak travel hours when each station handles between 15,000 and 20,000 daily commuters.
Officials from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) confirmed that In-Building Solutions (IBS) systems are installed at all underground stations and tunnels to improve network access for major service providers, including Airtel and Vodafone. IBS technology, commonly used in enclosed urban infrastructure, is designed to amplify mobile signals and maintain reliable coverage in areas that typically suffer from signal attenuation. “While the existing IBS framework provides basic connectivity, ongoing passenger volumes and environmental factors, such as monsoon humidity, can lead to temporary disruptions,” said a senior Maha-Metro official. “We are actively upgrading these systems to ensure uninterrupted service, especially during high-traffic periods and festive seasons like Ganeshotsav.”
The corporation has instructed telecom operators to strengthen their networks and is deploying new IBS units and network boosters at each underground station. Officials also noted that Jio services are expected to be integrated soon, which will broaden coverage and improve overall passenger experience. Urban mobility analysts suggest that consistent mobile connectivity within underground corridors is not only essential for commuter convenience but also integral to the adoption of cashless and app-based ticketing solutions. “Passengers increasingly rely on digital payments and travel apps for a seamless metro experience. Connectivity interruptions undermine these systems and may slow the city’s push towards smart, sustainable urban mobility,” said an independent transport consultant.
Maha-Metro emphasised that the network upgrades form part of broader efforts to create a commuter-friendly, inclusive transit system. By ensuring reliable connectivity, the authority hopes to support operational efficiency, encourage public transport adoption, and reduce reliance on private vehicles, aligning with Pune’s vision of sustainable urban mobility. Commuters, however, continue to express concerns over delays in restoring full connectivity. City authorities encourage passengers to report issues through official helplines and mobile apps to help prioritise stations requiring urgent attention.
As Pune expands its metro network, seamless digital connectivity will remain critical not just for passenger convenience but also for the city’s smart transport ambitions, including real-time tracking, digital ticketing, and integrated mobility services.
