National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has instructed all toll plazas under its jurisdiction to prominently display information regarding Local Monthly and Annual Passes. The initiative is designed to enhance awareness about concessional passes, their eligibility, fees, and procedures, thereby promoting cost-effective and seamless highway travel for private vehicle users nationwide.
According to officials from NHAI, the new measures will involve the installation of clear signage at toll plaza approaches, customer service points, and entry and exit locations. The boards will be multilingual, featuring English, Hindi, and relevant regional languages, and are expected to remain visible throughout both day and night, adhering to fee rules. In addition, details about the passes will be accessible digitally via the Rajmargyatra mobile app and NHAI project websites, ensuring wider reach for commuters who increasingly rely on mobile platforms. The Local Monthly Pass targets private vehicle owners residing within 20 kilometres of a toll plaza. To secure the pass, applicants must provide an Aadhaar card, vehicle registration certificate, and proof of residence. The pass is issued at toll plaza helpdesks following document verification. Officials emphasised that the pass aims to reduce repetitive cash transactions, improve commuter convenience, and streamline traffic flow at busy plazas.
Meanwhile, the Annual Pass, valid for one year or 200 toll crossings, can be purchased digitally through the Rajmargyatra app for a one-time fee of ₹3,000. This pass is applicable for private vehicles including cars, jeeps, and vans, and is automatically activated on the FASTag linked to the vehicle. Covering over 1,150 toll plazas across India, the annual pass is positioned as an efficient solution for regular commuters, particularly those travelling long distances or frequently on national highways. Experts note that these initiatives are part of NHAI’s broader effort to modernise toll operations, integrate digital solutions, and enhance sustainability. By reducing manual toll transactions, the initiative contributes indirectly to lower vehicular idling times and emissions, aligning with environmentally conscious urban mobility goals. Officials also highlighted that transparent communication about pass availability will foster trust among commuters and reduce the potential for misinformation or disputes at toll plazas.
NHAI’s move reflects a growing emphasis on user-centric policies in infrastructure management. By combining physical visibility with digital accessibility, the authority aims to simplify highway travel while promoting a fair and transparent system. The initiative is expected to become fully operational within the next 30 days, with continuous monitoring to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
