Pune Bengaluru Highway Delays Expose Mobility Gaps
A road journey from Pune to Bengaluru has once again highlighted the uneven pace of highway infrastructure improvements across western and southern India, with persistent bottlenecks in Karnataka continuing to affect travel efficiency despite major investments in corridor upgrades. The experience underscores broader questions around construction management, road safety and the reliability of key economic transport links connecting two of the country’s most important urban regions. While several stretches of the Pune–Bengaluru national highway now support faster movement than in previous years, travellers continue to encounter significant disruptions on parts of the route undergoing expansion. Among the most problematic sections remains the Dharwad–Hubballi corridor, where frequent traffic diversions and changing lane configurations create uncertainty for motorists and slow overall journey times.
The corridor serves as a strategic connection between industrial centres, logistics networks and growing urban economies across Maharashtra and Karnataka. As freight volumes and private vehicle ownership continue to rise, maintaining uninterrupted movement on such routes has become increasingly important for regional productivity. Transport analysts note that prolonged construction-related disruptions can increase fuel consumption, travel costs and emissions, undermining the efficiency gains expected from highway modernisation projects. Reports from road users indicate that the Dharwad–Hubballi stretch requires drivers to navigate repeated transitions from wider carriageways to narrower temporary alignments. Uneven road levels near diversion points further add to operational risks, particularly during peak traffic periods or poor visibility conditions. Such conditions highlight the importance of designing temporary traffic arrangements that prioritise safety while infrastructure upgrades are underway.
Safety concerns also extend beyond construction zones. Long-distance motorists continue to report challenges associated with lane discipline among heavy goods vehicles. Experts in highway management suggest that improved enforcement, clearer lane allocation and greater adoption of intelligent traffic monitoring systems could help reduce conflicts between freight and passenger vehicles on high-speed corridors. Further south, improved connectivity around Bengaluru’s peripheral road network has helped ease access to the metropolitan region. These gains demonstrate how strategic infrastructure investments can significantly reduce congestion when supported by efficient planning and traffic integration. However, isolated improvements may not fully deliver their intended benefits if weaker segments elsewhere continue to constrain corridor performance.
Electronic toll collection systems also remain an area requiring attention. Delays in FASTag transaction processing at some toll plazas have reportedly slowed vehicle movement, pointing to the need for more reliable digital infrastructure on national highways. For frequent travellers and logistics operators, seamless tolling remains essential to maintaining journey predictability. As highway authorities continue expanding and upgrading major transport corridors, the focus is increasingly shifting from construction alone to the overall quality of the travel experience.
