Hyderabad Buses Move Towards Smarter Ticketing

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is preparing to introduce a pre-boarding ticketing system for Hyderabad city buses, marking another step towards digitising public transport services. The initiative is expected to streamline passenger boarding, improve operational efficiency and encourage greater adoption of cashless payments across the city’s extensive bus network.

Under the proposed system, commuters will be able to purchase tickets before boarding through the MeeTicket mobile application, similar to the ticketing model used by Hyderabad Metro. Passengers can select their boarding and destination stops, make payments using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or bank cards and board buses with digital tickets already issued. The Hyderabad bus ticketing initiative is designed to address challenges experienced during peak travel hours, when crowded buses often make onboard ticket issuance time-consuming for both passengers and conductors. Transport officials believe advance ticketing can reduce boarding delays, improve schedule adherence and minimise disruptions caused by payment-related technical issues. Greater Hyderabad’s public bus network serves more than 26 lakh passengers every day through over 3,200 buses. A significant share of daily commuters currently travel under the Mahalakshmi free bus travel scheme, while digital payments contribute nearly one-fourth of the corporation’s daily city bus revenue. Expanding digital ticketing is expected to further strengthen cashless transactions and simplify fare collection.

The proposed system will also work alongside the TGSRTC Gamyam application, enabling passengers to monitor bus locations in real time and better plan their journeys. Urban mobility experts note that integrating ticketing with live vehicle tracking can improve commuter confidence by offering greater predictability and reducing waiting times. In addition to advance ticketing, TGSRTC is planning to extend digital services to student bus passes. The corporation has already introduced digital versions of several regular bus passes through the MeeTicket platform, receiving encouraging public response. Expanding the facility to students is expected to reduce queues at bus pass counters while improving administrative efficiency. Transport planners say the Hyderabad bus ticketing upgrade reflects a wider shift towards technology-enabled public transport systems in Indian cities. Digital ticketing, real-time information services and integrated payment platforms are increasingly viewed as essential tools for making public transport more accessible, efficient and user-friendly.

As Hyderabad continues to invest in smarter mobility solutions, the success of the proposed ticketing system will depend on reliable digital infrastructure, widespread commuter adoption and seamless integration with existing public transport services. Together, these measures could contribute to a more efficient, commuter-focused and sustainable urban transport ecosystem.
