Bengaluru and Mumbai, two of India’s busiest metropolitan hubs, are poised to be connected by a new superfast train, offering travellers a faster and more affordable alternative to flights and buses. Railway officials confirmed that work is progressing rapidly, and the service is expected to be operational soon.
For over four decades, the Udyan Express has remained the only dedicated daily train between the two cities, covering 1,139 kilometres in nearly a full day. Despite India’s advances in high-speed rail technology, the journey continues to stretch beyond 20 hours due to speed restrictions, frequent halts and operational delays. The new superfast service is expected to reduce travel time significantly, potentially bringing the journey down to 14–15 hours. Railway officials explained that any train designated as ‘superfast’ must maintain an average speed above 55 kilometres per hour. While the final route, stoppages and scheduling are still under review, capacity enhancements at both Bengaluru and Mumbai terminals have created the infrastructure to support such a high-frequency service. Officials added that each stoppage currently adds 7–8 minutes to overall travel time, and rationalising halts will be key to improving efficiency.
Experts from the trade and transport sector have long argued that improved connectivity between the two financial and technology powerhouses is not merely a matter of convenience, but also one of economic necessity. The current reliance on flights and long-distance buses has made travel costly and less sustainable. The introduction of a superfast train could ease pressure on air traffic, cut emissions, and align with India’s broader push for greener mobility solutions. Stakeholders believe that faster rail connectivity will support multiple sectors, from tourism to trade, by enabling smoother business travel and affordable options for middle-class passengers. Reducing travel time will also strengthen intercity collaboration between industries in Bengaluru’s technology corridors and Mumbai’s financial ecosystem, advancing India’s vision for integrated economic zones.
Despite the optimism, officials in the South Western Railway zone have clarified that no official circular has yet been issued by the Railway Board. The type of train—whether it will be a Vande Bharat or a different model—has also not been confirmed. However, experts suggest that once approvals are formalised, the operational framework can be rolled out quickly given recent infrastructure upgrades. For now, regular commuters between the two cities wait eagerly for a decision that could transform one of India’s most important rail corridors. While the railways face the challenge of balancing speed with accessibility, the announcement marks a turning point in addressing a long-pending demand for a faster and more sustainable Bengaluru–Mumbai rail link.
