Karnataka today granted permission to the National Thermal Power Corporation NTPC to conduct a preliminary study for establishing new nuclear power plants across the state. This decision by the cabinet marks a significant step towards bolstering the regions energy infrastructure and aligning with national goals for clean energy transition. The approval comes as the state seeks to identify optimal locations for these vital facilities. This move underscores Karnatakas commitment to exploring diverse power sources for its growing energy demands.
The cabinet’s approval follows an initial request from NTPC to study three specific sites located in Koppal Raichur and Vijayapura districts. However state ministers directed NTPC to broaden its scope considering Karnataka as a single unit for the feasibility study. This directive aims to identify the most viable locations across the state. The decision to reject the initial sites was influenced by various factors including opposition from local villagers who raised environmental and safety concerns during preliminary inspections. The state emphasized its desire for locations offering minimal public resistance and maximum operational feasibility for the proposed plants.

While an in principle approval has been granted for the study no specific timeframe has been set for NTPC to complete its comprehensive report. This initiative aligns with the central governments ambitious target of achieving one hundred gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by two thousand forty seven aiming to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Beyond the nuclear power plant study the cabinet also approved several other key projects. These include the development of a textile park in Raichur under a Public Private Partnership model and the procurement of thirty two forensic vehicles for the state.
Karnatakas decision to greenlight a comprehensive nuclear power plant study reflects its proactive stance on energy security and clean power. By requiring a statewide assessment, the government aims to find optimal locations, minimizing community impact. This pivotal step solidifies the states commitment to sustainable energy development, aligning with national strategic objectives for a robust energy future.
