Kanpur to Build 500 Acre EV Park with Rs 700 Crore Investment

Kanpur, once dubbed the “Manchester of the East” for its thriving textile industry, is poised for a transformative shift. The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans to establish a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing park, spanning 500 acres near Bhimsen, strategically located along the Dedicated Freight Corridor. With an investment of ₹700 crore, this initiative aims to position Kanpur as a pivotal hub in India’s EV ecosystem.

The chosen site offers unparalleled connectivity, facilitating seamless logistics for raw materials and finished products. Proximity to the dedicated freight corridor ensures efficient transportation, a critical factor for manufacturing operations. The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) is spearheading the development under the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision – 2030. The project is structured as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), fostering collaboration between government entities and private investors. The EV park is designed to house a diverse range of manufacturing units. Facilities will be established for the production of electric motors, chassis, steel parts, and lithium-ion cells.

Additionally, units for assembling batteries, chargers, controllers, and electronic components will be integrated, creating a comprehensive supply chain within the park. A dedicated research and development (R&D) center will further drive innovation, supporting advancements in EV technology and sustainable mobility solutions. Beyond manufacturing, the project emphasizes the development of an integrated EV components cluster to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This initiative aims to empower local entrepreneurs and startups, generating new business opportunities and substantial employment in the region. The establishment of the park is expected to create numerous job opportunities, contributing to the economic upliftment of Kanpur and surrounding areas.

This venture aligns with the broader ‘Make in India’ and green energy goals, promising economic development and a cleaner future. Uttar Pradesh has already made significant strides in the EV sector, accounting for approximately 25% of the total EVs on roads across India. The state government has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) worth ₹6,000 crore related to EVs and related infrastructure, further solidifying its commitment to becoming a leading EV manufacturing hub. Kanpur’s foray into electric vehicle manufacturing marks a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial landscape. With strategic planning, robust infrastructure, and a focus on innovation, the upcoming EV park is set to position Kanpur as a powerhouse in India’s electric mobility sector. This initiative not only promises economic growth but also contributes to the nation’s sustainability objectives, paving the way for a greener and more technologically advanced future.
