Hyderabad: Telangana has approved land allocation for a proposed large-scale data centre park in Ranga Reddy district, signalling another step in the state’s efforts to strengthen its digital infrastructure and attract technology-led investments. The project, if implemented as proposed, could significantly expand computing capacity while creating employment opportunities and supporting the region’s growing digital economy.
According to official information, around 170 acres of industrial land at Thimmaipally in Kandukur mandal has been earmarked for the proposed development. The facility is expected to be established through a special purpose vehicle promoted by a private infrastructure group and is planned with an estimated investment of ₹60,000 crore. The proposed campus is designed to deliver between 1,200 and 1,600 megawatts of data centre capacity, placing it among the larger planned digital infrastructure developments in the country. Industry analysts note that such facilities are becoming increasingly important as demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital payments and enterprise data storage continues to rise across India. Officials expect the project to generate around 1,000 direct jobs and approximately 4,000 indirect employment opportunities during construction and operations. Beyond employment, large data centres often stimulate demand for engineering services, logistics, facility management and specialised technology ecosystems, creating wider economic benefits for surrounding regions.
Urban development experts, however, point out that hyperscale data centres also place considerable pressure on electricity networks, water resources and transport infrastructure. As a result, future expansion will require careful planning around renewable energy integration, energy efficiency measures and sustainable resource management to minimise environmental impacts while ensuring operational reliability. The project also reflects Telangana’s broader ambition to position itself as a preferred destination for digital infrastructure investments. Hyderabad has already emerged as a major technology and innovation hub, supported by expanding IT parks, logistics networks and industrial corridors. Strengthening digital infrastructure could further enhance the state’s competitiveness in attracting global technology companies and cloud service providers. Infrastructure specialists emphasise that long-term success will depend not only on investment size but also on resilient utilities, high-speed fibre connectivity, reliable power supply and sustainable urban planning. Integrating renewable energy and water recycling into large-scale data centre developments is increasingly viewed as essential for balancing economic growth with climate resilience.
As planning advances, the proposed Telangana data centre project will be closely watched for its execution timeline, environmental safeguards and contribution to the state’s evolving digital economy.
