A Telangana State Police home guard deputed to the Railway Protection Force has been arrested and removed from service after a video allegedly showed him assaulting a woman and dragging her by her hair outside Hafeezpet railway station in Hyderabad, officials said on Saturday.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Ramesh identified the personnel as Anand and said he had been taken into custody. He will be produced before a magistrate for judicial remand, the commissioner said.
In a video statement, Ramesh said the arrest was made in connection with the assault at the railway station. He also said Anand had been removed from the rolls of the home guard and that his name would be struck off.
“We do not tolerate any such instances of violence against women, crime against women. Telangana Police follows a strict policy of zero tolerance for crime against women,” Ramesh said.
The action followed the circulation of a video on social media showing a man identified as the home guard allegedly beating a woman and later dragging her by her hair outside Hafeezpet railway station. The source report did not provide details about the woman’s medical condition, the circumstances preceding the incident or whether she had filed a separate complaint.
Telangana Director General of Police CV Anand said such conduct by police personnel could not be accepted, regardless of rank or the alleged provocation. He described the behaviour as being in disregard of departmental instructions and training.
“Such behaviour by our staff, whatever be the rank and whatever be the provocation, cannot be forgiven. It is abominable and in total disregard of all instructions and training,” the DGP said in a post on X.
According to the DGP, an inquiry established that the home guard was on deputation to the Railway Police Force and was not associated with the local police. Anand said the personnel would be removed from service, while a case would also be registered and criminal action initiated. He directed the Cyberabad Police Commissioner to act immediately.
South Central Railway said the incident at Hafeezpet railway station had been enquired into and that the personnel was identified as a Telangana State Police home guard deputed for duty at the station. The railway authority said he had been repatriated to the Telangana state police department for necessary disciplinary action.
The case places accountability across two connected systems responsible for safety at railway premises: the railway security setup and the state police department from which the home guard was deputed. The official statements indicate that both disciplinary and criminal action are being pursued, while the immediate judicial step is his production before a magistrate for judicial remand.
