The inauguration of the Ratu Road flyover has been rescheduled to July 3, 2025. Originally slated for June 19, the delay is attributed to the unavailability of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. This elevated corridor, constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), spans 4.18 kilometres, connecting NH-23 at Pandra to NH-75. The project, valued at ₹291 crore, aims to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion in central Ranchi.
The flyover’s design incorporates two lanes at one end and four at the other, supported by approximately 105 pillars. Notably, it features bulletproof and soundproof barriers along its stretch, enhancing safety and reducing noise pollution. The corridor also boasts extensive greenery, with ornamental plants like Kamini, Vectoria, Sanjeevani, and Arudha planted along the route. However, these plants have faced challenges due to inadequate sunlight and lack of protective measures, leading to some deterioration and theft.
Plans are underway to utilise the space beneath the flyover for community purposes. Proposals include developing badminton courts and other sporting facilities, aiming to promote recreational activities and community engagement. Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding the naming of the flyover. Various political and social groups have suggested names, reflecting the diverse cultural and historical significance attached to the project. While the flyover’s construction has introduced greenery, the environmental impact remains a topic of concern.
The initial enthusiasm for the ornamental plants has been tempered by their declining condition, raising questions about the project’s long-term sustainability and maintenance strategies. The Ratu Road flyover represents a significant step towards modernising Ranchi’s infrastructure and addressing urban traffic challenges. However, the project’s success will depend on effective maintenance, community involvement, and sustainable practices to ensure it meets the city’s evolving needs.
