Thane Municipal Corporation will enforce a 10 per cent water cut across its jurisdiction every Wednesday, with supply suspended for 24 hours in several areas from 9 am on October 28 to 9 am on October 29 as the civic body moves to conserve available water stocks.
The scheduled shutdown will affect areas supplied through the Thane Municipal Corporation’s network and the STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company Pvt Ltd. Residents in parts of Ghodbunder Road, Mumbra, Kalwa, Lokmanya Nagar, Vartak Nagar, Saket, Rutu Park, Jail, Gandhi Nagar, Rustomjee, Siddhachal, Indira Nagar, Rupadevi, Shree Nagar, Samata Nagar, Siddheshwar, Eternity and Johnson are among those expected to face interruptions.
The measure is being implemented as a precautionary response to concerns over the potential impact of El Nino and the possibility of drought-like conditions. The civic body’s revised water management plan is intended to regulate demand while protecting drinking-water availability across Thane.
According to the report, the state government has directed local authorities to manage available water resources carefully and prioritise drinking-water supplies. The state directive calls for planned and judicious use of water stocks across Maharashtra and is scheduled to remain in force until August 31, 2027.
The first shutdown will begin at 9 am on Wednesday, October 28, and continue until 9 am on Thursday, October 29. The 24-hour interruption means that households, commercial establishments and other users dependent on the municipal network will need to make arrangements for essential activities during the affected period.
The full list of affected locations includes residential and commercial pockets spread across Thane, including parts of Mumbra and Kalwa as well as neighbourhoods along Ghodbunder Road. The civic administration has advised residents to store water in advance, use it carefully and avoid unnecessary consumption before and after the shutdown.
The weekly measure places the city’s water-distribution system at the centre of a wider conservation effort. Because supply is delivered through both the civic body’s own network and STEM’s infrastructure, the disruption will be experienced across areas served by these systems rather than being limited to one local pipeline or neighbourhood.
The Thane Municipal Corporation has appealed to residents to cooperate with the administration and reduce wastage. It has advised households to store only the water required for essential use, rather than accumulating excessive quantities, while authorities prepare for the possibility of reduced availability in the coming months.
The scheduled shutdown will be followed by the civic body’s weekly water-management measures, with supply interruptions planned on Wednesdays under the revised arrangement. The state directive governing conservation and prioritisation of available water stocks is set to continue until August 31, 2027.
