Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Gets 2027 Launch Target, Undersea Tunnel Takes Shape

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is moving towards its first service in the final quarter of 2027, with construction advancing on a 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor that includes an underground station in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex and India’s first undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the latest project details in a post on X, saying the corridor was no longer only an announcement but a large construction project progressing across Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The first service is planned between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in the final quarter of 2027.

The Mumbai terminal is being built at BKC, one of the city’s major business districts. According to the details shared by the minister and reported by Gujarat Samachar, the station is being constructed approximately 32 metres, or around 100 feet, below ground level. The depth is greater than the height of a 10-storey building.

The underground station will have three levels for platforms, concourse facilities and services. Six platforms are planned, with each platform measuring more than 400 metres in length. It will be the only underground station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, according to the project update.

A few kilometres from the station site, construction is under way on a 7-kilometre rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek. The tunnel is being built by cutting through rock and will carry high-speed trains below the creek. The project update described it as India’s first undersea rail tunnel, making the Mumbai end of the corridor one of its most technically complex sections.

The trains are planned to operate at a maximum speed of 320 kilometres per hour, with an average speed of about 300 kilometres per hour between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The corridor will have 12 main stations: Mumbai BKC, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

The 508-kilometre alignment crosses three administrative regions and includes bridges, tunnels, elevated sections and station structures. The project is being developed as India’s first high-speed rail corridor, with construction activity continuing across the route. The latest update provides the stated launch window and details of the underground and undersea works, but does not provide a revised overall cost, construction completion percentage or a more specific opening date within the final quarter of 2027.

The next major milestone identified in the update is the planned start of the first Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train service in the final quarter of 2027, subject to completion of the corridor and associated station, track and tunnel works.
