Delhi RTR Flyover Closure Triggers Airport Traffic Disruptions

The Old Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover carriageway towards Vasant Vihar has been temporarily closed after cracks were detected at two locations, disrupting a key route between Indira Gandhi International Airport, South Delhi and Gurugram. The closure is expected to remain in place until October 26, subject to repair work and a subsequent safety clearance.

The affected carriageway was closed as a precautionary measure after traffic personnel noticed the cracks and reported the issue to the Public Works Department (PWD), a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer said. Officials said the decision was taken to prevent an accident or injury to commuters using the flyover.

Traffic snarls were witnessed after the closure, with motorists diverted onto the adjoining service road. The flyover normally carries traffic travelling from the airport towards Vasant Vihar and other parts of South Delhi. It is also used by commuters arriving from Gurugram and continuing towards South Delhi, Noida and other cities in the National Capital Region.

PWD officials, working with the Delhi Traffic Police, are carrying out repair work simultaneously at both locations where cracks were detected. Officials said the work is expected to be completed by October 26. The flyover will be reopened only after the necessary safety clearance, according to the authorities.

The closure affects an arterial connection used by airport passengers, daily commuters and motorists travelling between Delhi and neighbouring parts of the NCR. With vehicles shifted to the service road, commuters have been advised to expect additional travel time and plan their journeys in advance until the flyover is declared safe for traffic.

The Delhi Traffic Police has asked motorists to follow instructions from personnel deployed in the area and use alternative routes during the closure. Google Maps has been updated to show the diversion through the service road and mark the flyover as closed.

Commuters seeking traffic-related assistance can contact the Delhi Traffic Police helpline at 1095. The next operational milestone is the completion of repairs by October 26, followed by a safety assessment before the carriageway is reopened.
