Deendayal Port Authority Celebrates Record Cargo Handling Achievement

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla has marked a significant achievement in its operational capabilities by handling 70 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo this fiscal year. Remarkably, this milestone was reached 16 days earlier than in the previous year, underscoring the port’s ongoing growth and efficiency enhancements. In the last fiscal year, the 70 MMT threshold was crossed on 14th October 2023, demonstrating a commendable acceleration in performance.

This achievement is not solely a reflection of the DPA’s operational improvements; it also highlights the collaboration and commitment of all port users, stakeholders, and dedicated personnel, including officials, employees, and trade unions. Their concerted efforts have played a crucial role in propelling the port toward this significant accomplishment. A closer examination of the contributing factors reveals that various cargo categories experienced notable increases in tonnage compared to the same period last year. In the imports category, essential materials such as phosphoric acid, chemicals, finished fertilisers, rock phosphate, iron scrap, food grains, iron ore, machinery, sugar, timber, coking coal, and crude oil all registered growth. Meanwhile, in exports, there was a marked uptick in the handling of petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL), edible oils, chemicals, food grains, bentonite, salt, oil extractions, silica sand, and sesame seeds.

The Chairman of the DPA extended heartfelt congratulations to all port users and stakeholders for their invaluable contributions to this success. He emphasised that the unwavering support and collaboration of every individual involved have been instrumental in driving the port’s accomplishments. This achievement not only marks a critical milestone in the DPA’s journey but also signifies its commitment to sustainability. As the port continues to break barriers and set new benchmarks, it plays a vital role in the growth of India’s maritime sector. The increase in cargo handling capacity contributes to reducing logistical bottlenecks, which is essential for enhancing trade efficiency while promoting eco-friendly practices. In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, the DPA’s success story serves as a reminder of how collective efforts can lead to substantial progress. This milestone paves the way for future developments, fostering a resilient and robust maritime infrastructure that aligns with global standards and environmental considerations.
