Mumbai’s much-anticipated coastal road project is set to make a significant advancement with the opening of a crucial connector on September 12, providing uninterrupted travel from Marine Drive to Bandra. This new section, featuring a ‘bowstring’ arch bridge, will integrate with the existing Bandra-Worli Sea Link, allowing commuters to experience a signal-free journey along Mumbai’s western coastline.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that the new connector will first open for southbound traffic. However, during peak evening hours, when traffic flow is predominantly northbound, the southbound lane will temporarily accommodate northbound vehicles to maximise its utility and reduce congestion. This strategic traffic management decision aims to enhance the road’s efficiency as it becomes operational. Unlike previous phases of the project, which included more formal inaugurations, the new connector will likely open to traffic following a low-key inspection by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who had initially launched the coastal road project in March.
This section represents the fourth milestone in the phased rollout of the ambitious infrastructure initiative. Earlier stages saw the southbound route from Worli to Marine Drive opened on March 11, followed by the northbound carriageway up to Haji Ali on June 10, and the subsequent Haji Ali-Worli stretch on July 11. Presently, the northbound section is operational from 7 am to 11 pm, Monday to Friday, while the southbound section remains open daily, barring closures at Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk on Saturdays and Sundays. The BMC has projected the completion of the remaining works by the end of the year. Following the full operationalisation of the road, the civic body plans to enhance the adjoining areas with new amenities such as butterfly parks, cycle tracks, and a promenade. These additions will not only improve urban aesthetics but also provide Mumbaikars with new recreational spaces. The coastal road is poised to become a crucial artery in Mumbai’s transport network, significantly reducing travel time between key areas of the city and alleviating traffic congestion.
This development is expected to bolster Mumbai’s infrastructure, positioning the city as a more connected and commuter-friendly metropolis. As the project nears its completion, its impact on the local economy is already palpable, offering potential for increased investment in adjacent areas and further uplifting Mumbai’s status as India’s financial capital. The continued focus on infrastructure development reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents while accommodating its ever-growing population.
