Malkajgiri Launches Four-Bin Waste System Ahead of Ganesh Immersion

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation has introduced four-bin waste segregation across its jurisdiction and launched a separate programme to convert discarded flowers into organic products, placing household-level sorting at the centre of its waste management campaign during the ongoing Ganesh idol immersion period.

MMC Commissioner T Vinay Krishna Reddy urged residents to segregate household waste into four bins before handing it over to civic sanitation workers. He said segregation at source would allow waste to be managed more scientifically. The civic body has directed its Swachh Bharat Mission team to conduct awareness activities linked to the new system.

The municipal corporation has not specified in the announcement which waste streams will be assigned to each of the four bins. That operational detail will be important for residents and collection workers as the programme moves from public messaging to daily implementation. The civic body’s immediate instruction, however, is that households should separate waste before handing it over rather than mixing it at the point of disposal.

The floral-waste initiative will ask residents to collect flowers separately from other household garbage. According to Reddy, the separated material will be scientifically processed into useful organic products. The programme is intended to address a waste stream that can increase around religious and cultural events, including the current Ganesh idol immersion period.

The announcement links the segregation drive to Supreme Court directions and the Swachh Bharat Mission-2026 guidelines. The municipal corporation’s use of these frameworks indicates that the campaign is being positioned not only as a local cleanliness exercise but also as part of a broader compliance and waste-management effort. The supplied announcement does not provide details on the processing facility, the products to be made, collection frequency, or the agency responsible for handling the separated floral waste.

MMC has also unveiled an awareness mascot designed to explain waste segregation to children, young people and other sections of society. Three campaign vehicles fitted with LED screens have been flagged off to support the outreach effort. During the ongoing Ganesh idol immersion, the vehicles will visit major immersion points to communicate messages on four-bin segregation, floral-waste handling, cleanliness and environmental protection.

The timing places the campaign at a point when civic authorities are managing both routine household waste and waste associated with immersion activity. By sending the LED vehicles to immersion points, MMC is taking its awareness campaign beyond residential collection and into public spaces where residents and event-related waste flows converge.

For the system to work in practice, residents will need clear instructions on the four categories, while collection arrangements will need to preserve the separation after waste is handed over. The announcement confirms the civic body’s campaign, but does not state whether separate vehicles, collection schedules, monitoring systems or penalties will accompany the rollout.

MMC’s next stated step is the awareness drive through its Swachh Bharat Mission team, mascot and LED campaign vehicles. The vehicles will continue visiting major immersion points during the ongoing Ganesh idol immersion to promote segregation, floral-waste handling and environmental protection.
