Adilabad in Telangana is set to get a proposed 1,500-acre joint-use airport serving both defence and civilian operations, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Saturday, adding that nodal officers from the state and central governments would be appointed to speed up the project.
The proposed facility will include an Air Force base, a training facility, offices, townships and residential complexes, according to Kishan Reddy. The Union Minister for Coal and Mines said the same airport would also function as a civilian airport, creating a shared aviation facility for defence and public use.
Kishan Reddy made the announcement while speaking to reporters in Hyderabad. He said discussions on establishing the airport at Adilabad had been held by him, other Union ministers and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.
The proposed institutional arrangement will involve the Telangana government, the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Defence Ministry. Kishan Reddy said each would appoint a nodal officer to expedite the airport’s establishment. The announcement indicates that coordination between the state administration and two Union ministries will be a central part of the next stage of the project.
The minister did not provide a construction start date, commissioning timeline, proposed runway specifications or details of the civilian flight network. The statement also did not specify the location within the 1,500-acre site, the estimated project cost or the land acquisition and approval status.
The airport plan would give Adilabad a proposed aviation facility with both military and civilian functions rather than a standalone passenger airport. The defence component is expected to include an Air Force base and training infrastructure, while offices and residential complexes are also planned as part of the wider development described by the minister.
Kishan Reddy also provided an update on a separate proposed airport project at Warangal. He said its Detailed Project Report was under preparation and that the layout of the airport buildings was in the final stages of preparation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to perform the Bhoomi Puja for the Warangal airport, he added.
The next stated step for the Adilabad project is the appointment of nodal officers by the three governments and ministries involved. Further details on the project’s design, approvals, land, financing and implementation schedule were not announced.
