Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 2 has moved closer to commercial operations after Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) announced a 10-day morning traffic block for signalling software migration, testing and train trials. From September 15 to September 25, 2026, passenger services on Metro Lines 2A, 7 and 9 Phase 1 will begin at 6:30 am instead of their regular start time, according to an MMMOCL press release reported by Navbharat Times – Mumbai.
The testing is intended to prepare the three additional stations planned under Line 9 Phase 2 for integration with the operational Line 9 Phase 1 and the existing Metro network. The work will include signalling and train trials required before the new phase can be opened for passenger services.
MMMOCL said the signalling software required for speed trials on Line 9 Phase 2 is now available. The next stage involves testing and validating the new phase’s signalling system alongside the systems already operating on Lines 2A, 7 and Line 9 Phase 1. This validation is required before the new infrastructure can be integrated into the running network.
The testing will be managed through the Operations Control Centre at the Charkop depot. It will involve a controlled migration and testing of the signalling software, with technical teams using the early-morning block to complete the work while passenger operations are not running.
Because the affected corridors are already carrying passengers, MMMOCL said the tests must be conducted during a controlled period. The temporary change is designed to provide technical teams with continuous access to the operating system while limiting the effect on passengers to the beginning of the morning service window.
Passengers travelling on Metro Lines 2A, 7 and 9 Phase 1 have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly between September 15 and September 25. Services on these lines will start at 6:30 am during the testing period, according to the announcement.
Line 9 is being developed as part of Mumbai’s expanding metro network, with Phase 2 intended to add three stations to the already operating Phase 1. The current announcement does not specify the commercial opening date for the new stations or the date on which the integration and speed trials will be completed.
The testing represents a pre-operational step rather than the start of passenger services on Phase 2. The signalling migration, validation and train trials must be completed before the new section can be connected safely with the existing network. MMMOCL thanked passengers for their cooperation during the temporary operational adjustment and said the work is being carried out to complete the tests required for the safe commissioning of Line 9 Phase 2.
