At least 118 govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday, with 80 still under treatment at government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation hospitals in an update received by the civic body until 6 pm. In neighbouring Thane, 12 govindas were treated at two civic hospitals by 5.30 pm, according to details released by the Thane Municipal Corporation.
The Mumbai figure included five people who were admitted to hospitals, while 33 had been discharged after receiving treatment, the BMC said. The largest number of cases was recorded at KEM Hospital, where 29 injured govindas were treated. Fourteen remained under treatment and 15 had been discharged by the time of the update.
Nair Hospital reported 17 injured govindas, all of whom had been discharged. At Sion Hospital, seven people were treated and all had been discharged. Rajawadi Hospital received 13 injured govindas, including four who were admitted and remained under treatment; five had been discharged. Hinduja Hospital reported eight injured govindas, all of whom remained under treatment, while 11 were undergoing treatment at Potdar Hospital.
The injuries were reported as govinda groups across Mumbai and Thane formed human pyramids to break suspended handis during Janmashtami celebrations. The activity involves participants climbing on one another to reach the earthen pot suspended above the ground.
In Thane, four govindas had been admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital by 5.30 pm. Their injuries included back, neck, head and limb injuries. Jatin Patil sustained back and neck injuries, while 31-year-old Jatin Kesari suffered a back injury. Nandkishor Shelar, 65, sustained a head injury, and 35-year-old Nikhil Yadav suffered a minor injury to his left hand.
Eight other govindas were treated at the District Government Hospital in Thane. Harsh Sharma, 21, and Ayush Gupte, 19, suffered minor back injuries, while 23-year-old Girish Chipkar also sustained a minor injury. Omkar Shinde, 25, suffered a fracture to his right leg. Aman Yadav, 21, and Amey Naik, 23, sustained minor injuries to their right hands. Aakash Ghadge, 30, and Anish Rokade, 26, suffered injuries to their right legs.
The injured govindas treated in Thane included residents of Wagle Estate, Kisan Nagar, Hajuuri, Ambikanagar and Balkum. Naik was a resident of Girgaon in Mumbai. The civic updates covered cases recorded at the named hospitals during the celebrations, with the BMC update extending to 6 pm and the Thane update to 5.30 pm.
