Thirty-two Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi 2026 celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday, with four still undergoing treatment and 28 discharged from hospitals, according to information received from government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation hospitals until 3 pm.
Of the 32 injured participants reported in the update, 29 were treated at hospitals in the city. Four remained under treatment, while 25 had been discharged. Two injured Govindas were reported from Mumbai’s eastern suburbs and both were discharged. One injured participant was reported from the western suburbs and was also discharged.
Authorities reported no untoward incident connected with the celebrations until 3 pm. The injury updates came as hospitals in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane continued to monitor participants who required medical attention during the festival.
The Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell reported that 10 Govinda participants had been admitted to two government hospitals after sustaining injuries during the celebrations. Four were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, while six were receiving treatment at the District Government Hospital.
At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Jatin Patil, 30, sustained waist and neck injuries, while Jatin Kesari, 31, suffered a waist injury. Nandkishor Shelar, 65, sustained a head injury and Nikhil Yadav, 35, suffered a minor injury to his left hand, according to the disaster-cell update.
The six participants admitted to the District Government Hospital included Harsh Sharma, 21, and Ayush Gupta, 19, who sustained minor back injuries. Girish Chipkar, 23, suffered minor injuries, while Omkar Shinde, 25, sustained a fracture to his right leg. Aman Yadav, 21, and Amey Naik, 23, suffered minor injuries to their right hands.
The Thane disaster cell issued the update on Saturday afternoon as authorities continued to track injury reports from Dahi Handi events. The festival involves teams of participants, known as Govindas, forming human pyramids to break suspended earthen pots, creating a recurring need for emergency medical arrangements.
In Mumbai, the BMC had directed its healthcare facilities to remain on standby for the celebrations. According to a BMC spokesperson, Additional Municipal Commissioner City Prajakta Verma Lavangare instructed municipal hospitals, including major and peripheral facilities, to reserve beds for injured Govindas and provide them with free treatment.
The municipal arrangements were part of the annual preparations for the festival. Hospitals and disaster-management authorities were expected to continue monitoring injury reports and treatment status as updates became available.
