Thirty-eight Govindas were treated at two government hospitals in Thane after sustaining injuries during Dahi Handi celebrations on Saturday, according to information released by the Thane Municipal Corporation. The figures cover participants who reported to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital and the District Government Hospital up to 9 pm.
Of the 38 injured participants, 22 were treated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, while 16 were taken to the District Government Hospital. The injuries reported by the civic body ranged from minor hand and back injuries to head injuries, fractures and injuries to the legs, shoulders, chest, knees, waist and neck.
At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, a 65-year-old Govinda from Thane, identified as Nandkishor Shelar, was treated for a head injury. Three other participants were also listed with head injuries: Sanjit Verma, 30, Riyansh Sheikh, 58, and Ansh Mishra, 16. The hospital records also included participants with waist and neck injuries, shoulder injuries, knee injuries and injuries to the hands, legs and chest.
The hospital treated several participants from Kalwa, Thane and areas of Mumbai, including Jogeshwari, Bandra, Goregaon and Santacruz. Among those listed were a 17-year-old from Kalwa with a right-hand injury, a 20-year-old with a shoulder injury and a 24-year-old with a right-knee injury. The civic body did not provide further details on their discharge status or whether any patient required extended hospitalisation.
At the District Government Hospital, 16 injured Govindas were treated. The cases included a right-leg fracture suffered by 25-year-old Omkar Shinde from the CP Talav-Wagle Estate area. Other patients were listed with right-leg, knee, shoulder, chest, back and hand injuries. The hospital also treated participants from Kisan Nagar, Hajiuri-Ambikanagar, Balkum, Wagle Estate, Ambika Nagar and Jogeshwari.
The injured participants treated at the two hospitals included teenagers and adults. The youngest people listed were 16- and 17-year-olds, while the oldest was 65. The civic body’s figures include only those who reported to the two government hospitals named in its update and do not establish the total number of injuries across all celebration venues in Thane.
The Thane Municipal Corporation’s update did not specify the locations where the injuries occurred, the height of the human pyramids involved, or whether any organisers faced action. It also did not provide a separate breakdown of injuries by celebration venue. The reported figures covered treatment provided until 9 pm on Saturday.
