Ten govinda participants were admitted to two government hospitals in Thane after sustaining injuries during Dahi Handi 2026 celebrations, while 22 injuries were reported across Mumbai, authorities said on Saturday. The figures came as municipal and disaster management officials monitored cases and kept hospital facilities prepared for festival-related emergencies.
Four injured govindas were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane. Jatin Patil, 30, sustained injuries to his waist and neck; Jatin Kesari, 31, suffered a waist injury; Nandkishor Shelar, 65, sustained a head injury; and Nikhil Yadav, 35, suffered a minor injury to his left hand, according to an update issued by the Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell.
Six other participants were receiving treatment at the District Government Hospital. Harsh Sharma, 21, and Ayush Gupta, 19, sustained minor back injuries. Girish Chipkar, 23, suffered minor injuries, while Omkar Shinde, 25, sustained a fracture to his right leg. Aman Yadav, 21, and Amey Naik, 23, suffered minor injuries to their right hands.
The Thane disaster management cell issued the update on Saturday afternoon as authorities continued to monitor injury reports linked to the celebrations. The update did not report any other major incident connected with the hospital admissions.
In Mumbai, 22 govindas were injured during the festival, according to a Disaster Department update issued at 12.30 pm and based on information available until noon. Of those injured, 21 had been discharged and one remained under treatment at the time of the update.
Central and eastern suburban civic hospitals reported 20 injured participants, all of whom had been discharged. One injury was reported at a hospital in the eastern suburbs and the patient was discharged, while one injured govinda remained under treatment at a hospital in the western suburbs. The update said no untoward incident had been reported.
The Mumbai figures were compiled from information received from government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation hospitals. The injury count covers cases reported to those facilities and reflects the position available until noon on Saturday.
The BMC had directed its healthcare facilities across Mumbai to remain on standby during the annual festival. A BMC spokesperson said Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma Lavangare had instructed major and peripheral municipal hospitals to reserve beds for govindas and provide them with free treatment.
The hospital preparedness measures were part of the civic body’s annual arrangements for Dahi Handi, which draws participants and spectators across Mumbai and the wider metropolitan region. Authorities were expected to continue monitoring injury reports and treatment status as the celebrations concluded.
