Vasai | September 3, 2026 — Vasai’s traditional markets are witnessing heavy festive-season footfall two days before Gokulashtami and Dahihandi, with buyers purchasing decorated earthen pots, artificial flowers, torans, jewellery, children’s Krishna costumes and puja materials.
The biggest demand this year is for colourful pots used for Dahihandi celebrations. Artisans are selling decorated pots in different sizes, with prices ranging from ₹100 to ₹350. The pots feature fabric colours, shining beads, ornamental lace and other decorative elements.
Damji Kumbhar, a senior artisan who has been involved in pot-making for about 70 years, said preparations for upcoming festivals begin soon after Diwali. According to him, the market has also attracted several new traders who do not traditionally belong to the pot-making business, increasing competition among sellers.
Artisans have responded by experimenting with the appearance of the pots. Earlier, the products were generally painted white with simple patterns. This year, sellers are using brighter colours and additional decorative materials to attract customers, the report said.
Potters said the business currently generates a profit of about 25% after accounting for expenses and competition. The seasonal demand is providing a market for traditional craft products while also supporting traders selling related festival goods.
Shopping activity has extended beyond Dahihandi materials. Buyers are purchasing Bal Gopal clothing, jewellery and worship items for Gokulashtami, with families and children contributing to the crowd in Vasai-Virar’s main traditional markets.
Meanwhile, Dahihandi groups in Vasai have taken their human-pyramid practice into its final stage. Organisers have completed preparations to install tall pots at several junctions across the city. Further activity is expected in the markets and at celebration venues as Gokulashtami and Dahihandi approach.
