Thane | September 3, 2026 — The Thane Municipal Corporation has announced a 100% waiver of interest and administrative penalties on overdue domestic water bills, allowing eligible consumers to settle their outstanding principal and the current financial year’s bill in a single payment. The scheme began on September 1 and will remain in force until December 31, 2026.
Under the Thane water bill waiver scheme, household water connection holders must pay the full amount of their previous water bill arrears along with the bill applicable for the 2026–27 financial year. Once the one-time payment is made, the administrative charges imposed on the arrears—including interest and penalties—will be waived in full, according to the municipal administration.
The concession is limited to domestic water consumers. Commercial water connection holders are not eligible for the waiver, the civic body said. The scheme applies only during the four-month period from September 1 to December 31, 2026, and is not a permanent reduction in water bill dues.
The corporation has also warned consumers that water connections may be disconnected if arrears remain unpaid after the concession period ends. Water supply to such connections is expected to be stopped from January 1, 2027, if the outstanding bills continue to remain unpaid.
The announcement comes as the civic administration faces attention over its finances. The corporation has increased property tax and transfer charges as part of efforts to improve its financial position. The water bill concession has been announced alongside that broader revenue-collection context, with the opposition criticising the administration and calling for recovery of existing dues before increasing tax rates.
According to the reported terms, the waiver does not remove the underlying water bill principal. Consumers seeking the benefit must clear the eligible arrears and the current-year charge together. The relief applies only to the interest and penalty component described by the corporation as the administrative charge.
The decision places a four-month deadline before domestic consumers with overdue water bills. Those who complete the required one-time payment by December 31 will be eligible for the full waiver of interest and penalties on their qualifying arrears. Consumers who do not clear their dues within the stated period face disconnection proceedings after the deadline, as per the municipal warning.
