Pune, August 28: Pune City Police are tightening controls on high-volume sound equipment ahead of the 2026 Ganeshotsav and Dahi Handi celebrations, with plasma systems and pressure mids prohibited during processions. The move follows increased enforcement against excessive noise and comes as authorities prepare for large public gatherings across the city, where managing celebrations alongside residential, commercial and traffic needs remains a recurring civic challenge.
Police have indicated that equipment generating uncontrolled sound will be seized and violators may face action under applicable Noise Pollution Rules. The enforcement approach follows nearly 1,000 sound-level checks conducted during recent public processions, with cases registered against 148 sound systems found breaching permitted limits. Six high-decibel systems were also confiscated during recent Eid processions, according to the city police. Officials are now preparing for the much larger festival calendar, when processions and public events can place sustained pressure on neighbourhoods and transport corridors. A separate proposal under consideration could allow processions to operate with a maximum configuration of four bass speakers and four top speakers. The proposed ceiling is still being examined after discussions with festival organisers, political representatives and Ganesh mandals. Any final limit, however, would remain subject to statutory noise restrictions.
The distinction is important because speaker quantity alone does not determine environmental noise. Sound intensity, duration, distance from residential areas and the location of equipment all influence exposure. Urban planners and public-health specialists have increasingly linked prolonged excessive noise with sleep disruption, stress and reduced quality of life, making enforcement relevant beyond festival management. For Pune, the challenge is particularly significant because major celebrations overlap with dense residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and already congested roads. Effective regulation therefore requires more than equipment seizures. Clear permissions, real-time monitoring and predictable enforcement can help organisers plan events while reducing disruption for residents, workers, children and older citizens. State-level preparations for Ganeshotsav are also focusing on wider public safety. Authorities have been asked to review immersion routes, improve lighting, maintain safer road conditions and monitor food-safety requirements around public celebrations. Measures addressing firecracker use and loudspeakers are also part of the preparations.
Environmental concerns extend to idol immersion. Authorities have been directed to strengthen safeguards against pollution associated with Plaster of Paris idols, particularly during immersion activities that can affect water bodies. The coming festival season will test whether Pune can maintain its cultural traditions while keeping public spaces safer and quieter. Consistent sound monitoring, transparent rules and early coordination with organisers could allow celebrations to continue without shifting the environmental and social costs on to surrounding communities.
