HYDERABAD: Intermittent rain brought a welcome dip in temperatures across several parts of Hyderabad on Sunday, after a spell of hot weather earlier in August. The showers offered relief to residents but also highlighted the city’s continuing need for drainage, road and mobility systems that can cope with sudden changes in rainfall intensity. Weather records show Hyderabad experienced rain and overcast conditions through much of the day.
Rain began affecting parts of the city overnight and returned during the day, with showers reported across several northern, eastern and western locations. Moula Ali recorded the highest rainfall among the locations cited in the city data, at 52 mm by 7 p.m. Other notable readings included 24 mm at Kistareddipet, 21.8 mm at Keesara and 19 mm near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The rainfall was unevenly distributed. Miyapur recorded 15.5 mm, while Medchal received 14 mm and Kukatpally 13 mm. Such variations are typical of urban rainfall, where short distances can separate areas receiving substantial rain from locations experiencing relatively lighter showers.
For residents, the immediate benefit was a break from sustained heat. However, rainfall in a rapidly expanding city also puts pressure on roads, drains and low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department had warned of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in Hyderabad on August 23 and 24, along with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Its impact-based forecast also flagged the possibility of water pooling and slippery roads. The urban challenge is not simply the amount of rain received but how quickly the city can absorb and move it. Rapid construction and extensive paved surfaces reduce the amount of water that can naturally seep into the ground. Where drainage capacity is inadequate or blocked, even short periods of intense rain can disrupt traffic, affect pedestrians and expose vulnerable neighbourhoods to waterlogging.
This makes neighbourhood-level drainage and stormwater management increasingly important as Hyderabad continues to expand. Climate-resilient planning requires infrastructure capable of handling both intense rainfall events and longer dry periods, while preserving natural drainage channels and water-retention spaces. The Sunday showers therefore offered more than temporary relief from heat. They also provided another reminder that Hyderabad’s response to monsoon variability must extend beyond emergency road management. Better drainage maintenance, protection of natural water systems and climate-sensitive urban planning will be essential as the city grows.
