Pune: Public transport in Pune is set for a significant capacity boost as 50 new electric buses are scheduled to join the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) fleet over the next fortnight. The addition is expected to strengthen commuter services while supporting the city’s transition towards cleaner, lower-emission urban mobility amid rising travel demand.
The first batch of 25 buses is expected to arrive during the first week of July, followed by another 25 in the second week. Officials confirmed that manufacturing of the vehicles has reached its final stage, and technical inspections conducted at the production facility have cleared the buses for deployment after meeting prescribed quality and safety standards. The latest induction forms part of PMPML’s larger procurement programme for Pune, PMPML, Electric Buses, Public Transport, Sustainable Mobility, Urban Mobility, Green Transport, Clean Energy, Maharashtra, Climate Action, Smart Cities, Urban Infrastructure under which 650 vehicles were sanctioned to modernise the city’s public transport network. Of these, 535 buses are already operating across multiple routes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, providing cleaner alternatives to conventional diesel-powered services. With the arrival of the next 50 buses, the remaining balance will reduce further, while the final set is expected to be introduced in phases.
Transport planners say expanding the electric buses fleet is becoming increasingly important as Pune continues to experience rapid urban growth, expanding residential suburbs and increasing daily commuter volumes. A larger zero-tailpipe-emission fleet can help reduce air pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve the reliability of public transport, particularly on high-demand corridors. Experts also point out that strengthening bus services is critical for achieving sustainable urban development goals. Better public transport encourages a shift away from private vehicle dependence, helping ease traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption and improve overall urban air quality. These benefits are particularly relevant for Pune, where rising vehicle ownership has placed increasing pressure on road infrastructure. Officials indicated that the additional buses will improve route frequency and operational flexibility, enabling PMPML to respond more effectively to growing passenger demand. Improved fleet availability is also expected to reduce waiting times and enhance accessibility for commuters travelling to educational institutions, industrial areas and commercial centres.
Urban mobility specialists note that investments in electric public transport must be complemented by supporting infrastructure, including charging facilities, depot upgrades and efficient route planning, to maximise operational efficiency. Integrating cleaner transport with pedestrian-friendly streets and last-mile connectivity can further strengthen Pune’s broader mobility strategy.
