Chennai Traffic Relief Plan Reaches Key Intersections
A citywide effort to reshape how vehicles and pedestrians move through busy intersections is underway in Chennai, where authorities have begun redesigning dozens of critical road junctions to reduce bottlenecks and improve safety. The initiative reflects a growing recognition among Indian cities that relatively small geometric changes at intersections can unlock significant gains in mobility, fuel efficiency and public safety.
The first stage of the programme focuses on 94 junctions spread across the metropolitan area and is expected to be completed during July. The work centres on improving turning radii and approach curves at intersections, commonly referred to in traffic engineering as bell mouths, enabling vehicles to negotiate corners more smoothly and reducing delays caused by sharp turns and lane conflicts.The intervention forms part of a broader urban mobility strategy being advanced by Greater Chennai Corporation, which is simultaneously preparing plans for a much larger second phase covering roughly 600 additional intersections. Urban planners view such upgrades as a cost-effective alternative to expensive road widening projects that often require land acquisition and can diminish pedestrian space.
The city’s road network supports an extensive mix of bus corridors, neighbourhood streets and regional transport links that connect residential districts with industrial zones, commercial centres and educational institutions. Many of the identified locations are positioned where municipal roads meet state and national transport corridors, creating conflict points that contribute disproportionately to congestion and travel delays.Transport experts note that poorly designed junction geometry often results in abrupt braking, inefficient turning movements and unpredictable vehicle behaviour, increasing the likelihood of crashes and slowing public transport operations. A well-designed road junction upgrade can improve visibility, streamline traffic flow and reduce vehicle idling time, contributing to lower emissions in densely populated urban environments. The redesign programme also carries implications beyond vehicle movement. Wider pedestrian refuge areas and better-defined crossing spaces can improve accessibility for older residents, children and people with disabilities while discouraging informal encroachments that frequently narrow walkways and reduce visibility at intersections.
Several of the early interventions are concentrated along major corridors in central Chennai where traffic intensity remains high throughout the day due to the concentration of healthcare institutions, educational campuses and commercial activity. Officials involved in the programme indicate that lessons from the initial rollout will influence design standards adopted in later phases. As Indian cities search for lower-cost methods of improving urban mobility, Chennai’s road junction upgrade strategy may offer a template for balancing traffic efficiency with safer and more inclusive streets. The long-term success of the programme, however, will depend on maintenance, enforcement and integration with public transport and pedestrian infrastructure.
