Hyderabad: As Hyderabad prepares for continued urban expansion, the city’s water utility is launching a comprehensive assessment of future storage infrastructure across the Comprehensive Urban Region Expansion (CURE) area. The study aims to identify long-term solutions that can strengthen drinking water resilience while supporting the city’s growing residential, commercial and industrial footprint.
The water storage expansion exercise will evaluate existing reservoirs, transmission infrastructure and future demand across the CURE region, which includes Greater Hyderabad as well as adjoining urban jurisdictions that are witnessing rapid population and real estate growth. The findings are expected to guide future investments in storage capacity and network upgrades. Officials have directed engineering teams to commission a technical feasibility study through specialist consultants. The assessment will examine projected water demand, additional storage requirements, infrastructure costs and operational efficiency before recommending expansion strategies for the enlarged service area. Beyond increasing storage capacity, the study will explore ways to improve the city’s distribution network through interconnected trunk pipelines and gravity-fed water systems. Engineers will also assess advanced pipeline configurations that reduce service interruptions during road widening and other public infrastructure projects.
A key objective of the water storage expansion initiative is the creation of emergency reserves capable of supplying at least one day’s drinking water during unexpected disruptions.
