The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to expand the use of digital technologies across public spaces through a programme that combines AI crowd monitoring with QR-enabled information systems and interactive heritage displays. The initiative signals a broader shift in how India’s largest city intends to manage public movement, improve access to civic information and strengthen the role of technology in everyday urban governance. The first phase of the programme will focus on high-footfall locations, where artificial intelligence will be used to observe pedestrian movement and identify crowd build-up in real time. Municipal authorities expect the system to improve operational decision-making during festivals, emergencies and routine peak-hour congestion by providing faster situational awareness to civic agencies and emergency responders.

Urban planners note that as Mumbai continues to experience rising population density and increasing pressure on transport hubs, waterfronts and public squares, digital tools are becoming an important layer of city management. However, they also point out that technological interventions deliver lasting value only when supported by efficient ground-level infrastructure, trained personnel and transparent governance frameworks. Alongside AI crowd monitoring, the civic administration plans to introduce QR-based digital access points at prominent public locations. Residents and visitors will be able to retrieve information about nearby civic facilities, public services and the historical significance of important landmarks through their smartphones. The approach is expected to reduce dependence on physical signage while making city information more accessible and easier to update over time.

Another component of the programme seeks to reimagine heritage interpretation through digital street museums.
