Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated planning for a new flyover connecting Sarkhej Circle with the New Ring Road, a project aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion in one of the city’s fastest-growing urban corridors. The proposed infrastructure is expected to strengthen road connectivity while supporting Ahmedabad’s broader mobility and urban expansion strategy.
The proposed four-lane flyover will extend for around 1.5 kilometres, linking Sarkhej Circle to the existing New Ring Road flyover. The alignment is planned to cross the Ahmedabad–Botad railway line at Level Crossing-28 before integrating with the city’s existing road network. It will also pass over key junctions, including the Sarkhej Circle–Sanand Road intersection, LJ Circle and the Sanand Junction area, where increasing traffic volumes have created recurring bottlenecks. The Sarkhej New Ring Road Flyover is intended to improve vehicle movement along SG Highway and surrounding arterial roads by reducing delays at busy intersections and railway crossings. Urban mobility experts note that grade-separated corridors can enhance travel reliability and lower vehicle idling time, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and lower transport-related emissions when integrated with wider traffic management measures. The project forms part of Ahmedabad’s ongoing investment in transport infrastructure as the city prepares for future growth and upgrades public infrastructure. Alongside new flyovers, authorities are examining improvements through road widening, railway overbridges, underpasses, parking facilities and junction redesign to create a more efficient urban transport network.
Infrastructure planners believe such projects can improve economic productivity by reducing travel time for commuters, freight operators and businesses operating along major industrial and commercial corridors. However, they also emphasise that flyovers alone cannot address long-term mobility challenges unless supported by stronger public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and integrated land-use planning. Funding for the proposed Sarkhej New Ring Road Flyover is expected to be sought through the Gujarat Urban Development Mission Fund. Detailed engineering studies, design approvals and financial clearances will determine the project’s implementation timeline before construction can begin.
As Ahmedabad continues to expand, transport investments are increasingly being evaluated not only for their ability to ease congestion but also for how they contribute to safer, more connected and climate-responsive urban development. Ensuring new road infrastructure complements sustainable mobility options will remain central to creating a resilient transport system capable of supporting the city’s future growth.
