Hyderabad Treated Water Plan Fuels Industrial Growth
Hyderabad: Hyderabad is preparing to expand the use of reclaimed water as part of a long-term strategy to support industrial growth while protecting scarce freshwater resources. The city is planning a dedicated network to supply treated wastewater to emerging industrial corridors, a move that reflects the growing need for sustainable water management as demand from data centres, advanced manufacturing and logistics facilities continues to rise.
Urban planners increasingly view treated wastewater as a critical resource rather than a waste product. As Hyderabad attracts greater investment in technology infrastructure and large-scale commercial developments, pressure on conventional water sources is expected to intensify. Expanding the use of treated wastewater infrastructure could help reduce dependence on potable water while ensuring industries have a reliable alternative supply. The proposed network will connect sewage treatment plants with key development corridors, including the western growth belt stretching towards Shabad and the eastern corridor leading to the city’s upcoming expansion zones. These areas are expected to witness rapid growth in data centres, industrial parks, warehouses, institutional campuses and commercial projects over the next decade. Officials estimate industrial demand for reclaimed water will increase significantly by 2035 as new projects become operational. The planned infrastructure will include treatment upgrades, storage facilities, pumping stations and dedicated transmission pipelines capable of delivering non-potable water to major users.
Industry experts note that treated wastewater infrastructure has become an essential component of urban resilience in fast-growing metropolitan regions. By separating industrial water demand from drinking water supplies, cities can improve long-term water security while reducing pressure on rivers, reservoirs and groundwater resources. The approach also aligns with circular economy principles by recovering value from existing urban wastewater systems. The project is expected to be implemented through a public-private partnership, with the selected private operator responsible for developing, operating and maintaining the network over the concession period. Public agencies will continue to provide regulatory approvals and facilitate access to land and utility corridors required for construction. Urban development specialists believe such investments could strengthen Hyderabad’s competitiveness as businesses increasingly evaluate water availability before selecting locations for capital-intensive facilities. Data centres, in particular, require substantial quantities of water for cooling operations, making dependable recycled water supplies an attractive alternative.
As cities continue balancing economic expansion with environmental sustainability, the success of Hyderabad’s reclaimed water strategy will depend on efficient execution, reliable treatment standards and transparent governance. If delivered effectively, the initiative could become a practical model for integrating water reuse into urban infrastructure planning while supporting industrial growth without placing additional strain on precious freshwater resources.
