North Bengal Districts Prepare For Lightning Threat

A fresh phase of North Bengal thunderstorms is expected to develop early next week, prompting meteorological authorities to place several hill and adjoining districts on alert. The forecast signals a shift from the current dry spell across West Bengal and highlights the growing importance of early weather advisories for climate-sensitive regions and urban settlements in the Himalayan foothills. Weather officials have indicated that districts in the northern hills  including Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong  are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning beginning Monday. The advisory categorised the situation under a yellow alert, which typically signals the possibility of localised weather disruptions and calls for heightened preparedness among residents and local administrations.

The warning follows a period of relatively stable weather conditions across the state. Over the next three days, most districts are expected to witness largely dry conditions with partly cloudy skies. In Kolkata, daytime temperatures are projected to hover around the low-to-mid 30 degrees Celsius range, with a marginal increase expected over the weekend. Night-time temperatures are likely to remain comfortable in the early 20s. However, the developing weather system could bring scattered rainfall to parts of northern plains districts such as Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and North Dinajpur. Meteorologists suggest that the approaching convective activity may extend to several southern districts as well, bringing intermittent pre-summer showers and thunderstorms through the middle of the week. Urban planners and disaster management experts note that North Bengal thunderstorms often have implications beyond immediate rainfall. Lightning strikes and sudden wind gusts frequently pose risks to hillside settlements, tea-growing regions, and small towns where power and communication infrastructure can be vulnerable.

Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures during thunderstorms, particularly avoiding open areas and seeking shelter in stable buildings when lightning activity intensifies. For hill towns and rapidly expanding peri-urban settlements, early warnings are considered essential in reducing risks to residents and infrastructure. The forecast also reflects broader climate patterns affecting eastern India, where transitional months between winter and summer are increasingly marked by short but intense weather events. Experts studying climate resilience in Himalayan regions say such episodes underline the need for stronger early warning systems, resilient infrastructure planning, and public awareness in fast-growing urban clusters.

Recent temperature observations illustrate the contrasting climatic conditions across the state. While Kolkata recorded a daytime temperature slightly above seasonal norms, hill regions experienced much cooler readings. In Darjeeling, early morning temperatures remained in single digits earlier this week, while parts of the plains reported mid-teen minimum temperatures. As the state transitions toward the pre-monsoon phase, weather officials say more such convective developments are likely. For city authorities, municipal planners, and infrastructure managers, the coming weeks will test preparedness systems designed to protect communities from sudden weather fluctuations while maintaining urban services.
