PUNE: The India Meteorological Department has warned of intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of India, with isolated extremely heavy rain forecast in Jharkhand. The wider weather pattern carries implications for urban centres such as Pune, where drainage, road capacity and emergency preparedness remain critical as intense monsoon spells place additional pressure on city infrastructure.
The latest IMD forecasts indicate heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and western Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rain is also expected in several other regions, including West Bengal and Sikkim, Kerala, Punjab, Delhi-NCR and parts of the northeast. The immediate concern is not simply the amount of rain but how quickly urban systems can absorb it. Short-duration, intense rainfall can overwhelm storm-water drains, flood underpasses and disrupt road and rail movement even when rainfall is concentrated in relatively small areas. The weather situation is being influenced by active monsoon systems over eastern and central India.
