Zika Scare Mumbai Safe Experts Assure

Despite recent reports of Zika virus cases in Pune, Ahmednagar, and Kolhapur, medical experts and the Mumbai civic body have reassured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm in the city. Last year, Mumbai recorded two cases of Zika: a 15-year-old girl from Kurla and a 79-year-old man from Chembur. In 2022, a seven-year-old girl from a government residential school in Zai, Talasari, had also tested positive for the virus.

The Zika virus, primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, is generally considered mild but shares symptoms with other mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and chikungunya. Common symptoms include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. Given the overlap in symptoms, it is crucial for individuals experiencing these signs to consult a doctor. A doctor from the department of infectious disease at HN Reliance Hospital, stated that current PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing in Mumbai has not detected any Zika cases this year. “We have only recognised cases of dengue so far,” he said. He emphasised the importance of seeking medical advice for symptoms like fever, headache, rash, body ache, and back pain. Preventive measures such as wearing fully covered clothing to prevent mosquito bites are also recommended.

A a physician at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, noted that the number of Zika cases in Maharashtra remains limited relative to the state’s population. “Zika virus generally does not have a serious impact except in certain groups like pregnant women and senior citizens. However, if fever and rash do not respond to symptomatic treatment within 48 hours, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially for pregnant women,” he advised. He added that individuals with pre-existing health conditions or organ failures might face more severe issues if infected. Health experts underscore the importance of preventive measures to combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating stagnant water around homes are crucial steps in reducing the risk of mosquito breeding. While the current focus remains on monitoring and controlling the spread of Zika in other parts of Maharashtra, Mumbai’s health infrastructure is on alert, ensuring that any emerging cases are promptly identified and managed. Public health officials continue to urge vigilance and adherence to preventive measures to maintain the city’s Zika-free status.
