Wormwood Hotels Plans Rs 80 Crore Expansion Across Bengal

Wormwood Synergy Hotels plans to invest around Rs 80 crore to add five hotels across eastern India over the next two years, with projects in Shantiniketan, Siliguri, Digha and the Sundarbans forming the company’s main West Bengal expansion pipeline.

The Kolkata-based hospitality group said the proposed investment would take its total committed investment to approximately Rs 180 crore. It is targeting an increase in its portfolio from five to 10 active properties by 2027, combining new construction with strategic acquisitions in tourism, leisure and business destinations.

The company currently operates five hotels in Puri, Darjeeling, Gangtok, Varanasi and Bhagalpur, with a combined inventory of 198 rooms. The expansion would extend its presence across destinations that serve different travel markets, including cultural tourism, coastal leisure, nature-based travel, transit stays and business visits.

Construction has already started on the group’s planned property in Shantiniketan, a major cultural tourism destination in West Bengal. The company is also preparing to open a hotel in Siliguri in December 2026. The Siliguri project is intended to serve leisure travellers, transit passengers and business visitors in north Bengal, a region that functions as an important gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim and the northeastern states.

Further projects are planned in Digha and the Sundarbans, where the company has completed property acquisitions and expects development work to begin. The two projects are expected to add 65 rooms in total, comprising 30 rooms in Digha and 35 rooms in the Sundarbans. Their proposed positioning reflects the company’s focus on short leisure breaks, coastal tourism and nature-led travel.

The expansion also includes a proposed 70-room property in Mandarmani, which is being evaluated with a large banquet facility. According to the company, the development would target weekend travellers, families, destination weddings, social events and corporate gatherings. The project would combine accommodation with event infrastructure, although the source material does not provide a construction timeline or investment figure for the Mandarmani property.

The company’s strategy highlights how hospitality investment is following the growth of domestic tourism beyond established metropolitan and hill-station markets. In West Bengal, the proposed projects span cultural, coastal and ecological destinations rather than being concentrated in Kolkata. That geographic spread could create additional demand for local construction, property services, transport connections and tourism-related employment, although the company has not disclosed project-wise job estimates or detailed development plans.

Soumya Sengupta, founder of Wormwood Synergy Hotels, said the group was focusing on emerging tourism destinations across eastern India and properties designed for leisure travellers, families and corporate guests. He said the company’s priorities included creating hospitality experiences while contributing to local tourism, employment generation and economic development.

Beyond West Bengal, Wormwood Synergy Hotels is exploring opportunities in Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. The company’s stated target is to operate 10 active properties by 2027, with the progress of the announced projects depending on construction, approvals, acquisitions and opening schedules that have not been detailed in the available announcement.
