Worli Flyover Set to Cut 15-Minute Detour by January 2027

The BMC has set January 31, 2027, as the deadline to complete a flyover and subway linking E Moses Road and Annie Besant Road in Worli, a project expected to save motorists up to 15 minutes by removing the current detour through the congested Worli Naka.

The Worli flyover and subway will provide a direct connection between the Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium, which are located close to each other but are currently connected by a route passing through the junction where E Moses Road meets Annie Besant Road. The existing route adds nearly 2 km to the journey.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited the construction site on Thursday to review progress and directed civic officials to complete the pending work by the January deadline. He also instructed the project team to increase the pace of construction by deploying additional manpower, machinery and other resources.

According to civic officials, piling for the main flyover has been completed in the Nehru Science Centre and Jijamata Nagar sections. The piles have a diameter of 1,200 mm, while work on the pile caps is currently underway.

Construction of portal beams and girders is progressing at both the project site and the production centre. Of the 18 girder spans planned for the project, 17 have been completed and work on the remaining span is in progress. Slab work and span concreting are also underway, the officials said.

The BMC had prepared plans for the flyover and subway in 2022 to address the circuitous route between the two roads. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 285.61 crore and includes a 571-metre-long flyover with a total width of 18.3 metres.

The January 31 deadline will now depend on the completion of the remaining girder span, pile caps, slab work, span concreting and associated construction activities. Civic officials have been directed to mobilise additional resources to meet the scheduled completion date.
