Airfares into Kolkata for the opening of Durga Puja are behaving differently from normal advance-booking patterns, with passengers arriving for the festival facing a sharp premium that is not mirrored on flights leaving the city. An analysis of fares captured on September 16 across 53 domestic routes found that the median advertised fare into Kolkata for October 16 was Rs 14,117, compared with Rs 8,259 for the following week and Rs 9,140 for same-day travel. The October 16 fare was therefore 71% higher than the next-week fare and 54% higher than the same-day reading.
The result is significant because airline pricing usually rewards advance planning. Seats generally become more expensive as departure approaches and aircraft occupancy rises. In this sample, however, the October 16 price was higher than readings for tomorrow, next week, next month, two months ahead and three months ahead on routes entering Kolkata. The date coincides with Maha Shashthi, commonly treated as the first day of Durga Puja, although some Bengali calendars place it on October 17. Vijaya Dashami falls on October 21.
The figures suggest that the fare shock is not simply an October effect. Across the seven routes into Kolkata, the October 16 fare was 65.3% higher than the November 15 fare on the same routes. November 15 falls three weeks after the festival and before the December holiday period, making it a useful comparison date for a more ordinary travel day. By contrast, fares for the other 40 routes in the study that did not connect to Kolkata were, in aggregate, 5.6% cheaper on October 16 than on November 15.
That comparison matters because it separates festival-linked demand from the normal effect of booking at different distances from departure. The October 16 and November 15 fares were not captured at the same advance-booking interval, so the usual shape of airline pricing is present in both readings. But if that factor were driving the result by itself, similar movements would be expected across the wider route set. Instead, Kolkata stood apart from the other seven destination cities. Hyderabad recorded the next largest October premium at 1.9%, while the remaining six cities were cheaper in October than in November.
The route-level numbers show how uneven the burden is for passengers. Chennai to Kolkata had the steepest rise, at 94.9%, followed by Mumbai to Kolkata at 78.1%, Bengaluru to Kolkata at 76.5%, Hyderabad to Kolkata at 65.3%, Pune to Kolkata at 26.2%, Delhi to Kolkata at 22.2% and Ahmedabad to Kolkata at 6%. In absolute terms, the additional one-way cost between October 16 and November 15 was Rs 7,560 from Chennai, Rs 7,310 from Bengaluru and Rs 6,682 from Mumbai. The median additional cost across the seven routes was Rs 5,145.
The scale of the increase also weakens a simple capacity explanation. Ahmedabad had four flights a day to Kolkata and recorded the smallest increase among the seven routes. Bengaluru had 11 daily flights and recorded the third-largest rise, while Pune had three and ranked fifth. Delhi, with 21 daily flights, fitted the expectation that greater frequency could moderate fares, but the overall ranking of routes by flight frequency and fare increase barely aligned.
The clearest signal comes from comparing the two directions of travel. On the Mumbai-Kolkata pair, the fare into Kolkata rose 78% against the November comparison, while the Kolkata-Mumbai fare rose only 5%. Bengaluru-Kolkata was up 76%, but Kolkata-Bengaluru was 22% cheaper. Across the six city pairs with fare data in both directions, the median increase on flights entering Kolkata was 46%. On return flights, fares were 8% lower than in November.
This directional difference shows that the market is responding to a concentrated arrival requirement. Airlines are not applying a uniform premium to travel connected with Kolkata during the period. The higher price is attached primarily to landing in the city during the festival window. The same aircraft movement, viewed in the opposite direction, can be priced much closer to an ordinary travel pattern. That distinction is important for households planning a round trip, because the largest cost may sit on the inbound leg rather than being distributed evenly across both journeys.
The pattern also distinguishes Durga Puja from another major festival in the same period. Navratri runs from October 11 to 20 in Gujarat, and the October 16 reading falls within the festival. Yet fares into Ahmedabad on that date were 20.9% below the November comparison, making Ahmedabad the cheapest of the eight cities in the study. The difference indicated by the data is not the presence of a festival alone, but the geography of the people who travel for it.
Garba is widely celebrated in the places where its participants already live, while Durga Puja draws a dispersed Bengali community back to Kolkata. The fare data captures that distinction as a mobility pattern: one festival generates comparatively local participation, while the other creates a pronounced, time-bound flow of passengers towards a single metropolitan destination. That demand is visible not only in the level of fares but in their direction, timing and divergence from the wider domestic market.
For passengers, the practical implication is that changing the travel date can have a greater effect than waiting for a routine advance-booking benefit. In the fare capture, flying into Kolkata on November 15 cost about one-third less than flying on October 16, with a potential saving of roughly Rs 5,000 per passenger each way based on the median route comparison. The data also indicates that the return journey should be priced separately rather than assumed to carry the same premium as the inbound flight.
There are important limits to what the analysis can establish. The figures are medians of advertised fares captured on the morning of September 16, not records of what passengers ultimately paid. Prices can change, and October 16 represents one date rather than the entire Puja week. The comparison dates also differ in booking distance, although the 40-route comparison is intended to account for that normal pricing effect. The dataset identifies airlines operating on the routes but does not identify which carrier posted each fare, so it cannot establish which airline, if any, was responsible for setting a particular price.
The evidence nevertheless establishes a clear urban-mobility signal. Kolkata’s festival economy is supported by a short, highly concentrated arrival wave that links the city to migrant, family and community networks across India. In this case, the pressure is appearing in the cost of access to the city rather than in a general rise across all air travel. The fare pattern shows how a cultural event can reshape metropolitan connectivity, turning a fixed calendar date into a major demand shock for one direction of travel.
