VinFast Electric Scooters Move Closer to India Launch With Dealer Search

VinFast has begun inviting applications for exclusive dealerships for its electric two-wheelers in India, signalling that the Vietnamese automaker is moving closer to launching its electric scooter business in the country. The company is also preparing to assemble electric two-wheelers locally at its manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

The dealership invitation was issued through a recent social media post seeking partners for VinFast E-Motorcycle outlets across India. The company said it wanted to build an ecosystem around “smart and sustainable electric mobility” and invited prospective partners to help expand its presence across the country. Applications are scheduled to remain open until September 15.

“Something massive is building at VinFast E-Motorcycle India, and we are about to open the doors to a historic journey,” the company said in the post. It added that “the blueprint is ready” and that a major announcement was expected soon. VinFast did not provide details of the electric two-wheeler variants when contacted, according to the report.

The company’s move comes as it prepares to use the Completely Knocked Down route for local production. Under this arrangement, components would be imported from overseas facilities and the electric two-wheelers assembled at VinFast’s car manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi. The planned assembly activity would add scooters to the operations already being developed by the company in Tamil Nadu.

VinFast’s registrations rose 43.5 per cent month on month to 2,196 units in August from 1,530 units in July, according to the information cited in the report. The figures were reported in the context of the company’s preparations for its Indian electric two-wheeler entry, although the source did not provide a further breakdown of the registrations.

Industry participants said a dealership network would be important for reaching customers across India. S Sathyanarayanan, a two-wheeler dealer in Villupuram, described the electric two-wheeler industry as being at an early stage with room for expansion. He said electric two-wheelers account for around 9 per cent of the overall two-wheeler market, compared with conventional internal-combustion-engine vehicles, and said he planned to apply for a VinFast dealership.

Bharat Kumar Chordia, treasurer of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, said VinFast had experience in the electric two-wheeler segment in Vietnam. He also pointed to differences in festivals and auspicious buying occasions across Indian states, saying a broad dealership presence would help the company remain close to prospective buyers.

The electric two-wheeler plans are being developed alongside VinFast’s broader investment in Tamil Nadu. In December 2025, VinFast and the Government of Tamil Nadu signed a memorandum of understanding covering approximately 200 hectares at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi. The land allocation is intended to support the expansion of the company’s existing facility.

As part of the second phase of its reported $2 billion commitment to Tamil Nadu, VinFast said it would invest $500 million in Thoothukudi to develop dedicated workshops and production lines for electric buses and e-scooters. The planned operations are to cover manufacturing, assembly, testing and related activities.

The dealership announcement follows a Reuters report that the company was suspending production plans for some car variants in India. VinFast subsequently said that it had not changed or suspended production plans for models currently being sold in India and would continue CKD assembly at its Thoothukudi plant. The company’s next stated milestone for the electric two-wheeler business is the September 15 deadline for dealership applications.
