Vegetable Prices Surge, Tomatoes Hit Rs 100/kg

Mumbai is once again facing a surge in vegetable prices, with tomatoes leading the pack by reaching an unprecedented Rs 80-100 per kilogram in various parts of the city, including Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan. Other essential vegetables such as onions, potatoes, green chillies, and coriander have also seen significant price hikes, with drumsticks soaring to a staggering Rs 200 per kilogram.

Wholesale trader told media that tomato prices from Vashi (Rs 26-38), Pune (Rs 23-40), and Sangamner (Rs 25-37). He attributed the price rise to excessive heat, which has led to spoilage and increased costs, especially for leafy vegetables, which are notably more expensive this year compared to the same period last year.

The tomatoes were selling for Rs 80 in Mulund, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan markets, Rs 90 in Powai, and between Rs 80-100 in Bandra Pali Market, Khar municipal market, Matunga, Malad, and Borivli. Kalwa Market in Thane recorded the highest price at Rs 100 per kilogram. Smaller tomato variants, which are less suitable for cooking, were sold for Rs 60-70 in Andheri Lokhandwala. Online shoppers found only hybrid and organic tomatoes available, priced at Rs 93. The high prices have forced consumers to reconsider their usage of these staples in daily cooking. A consumer from Kanjurmarg noted the frequent use of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes in Indian cuisine, expressing concern over the rising costs.
