The scheduled opening of the Vasai-Virar sports complex at Bolinj and a theatre at Majethia in Nalasopara has triggered a political dispute over administrative approvals, government protocol and the use of civic resources, with the BJP warning that its representatives and residents could conduct their own inauguration if the municipal commissioner does not respond by the night of 2 October 2026.
According to a report by Loksatta – Vasai-Virar, Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation Mayor Ajiv Patil has issued a letter stating that both facilities will be inaugurated on 3 October 2026. The announcement has been challenged by BJP representatives, who have questioned whether the programmes have received the necessary administrative approval and why an official invitation card from the municipal corporation has not been issued.
The BJP has also alleged that the proposed events do not follow government protocol. Manoj Patil, the opposition leader, said the municipal administration must take immediate note of a letter submitted by Vasai MLA Sneha Dubey-Pandit and provide a written explanation by the night of Friday, 2 October. If the response is not satisfactory, BJP elected representatives and citizens would themselves inaugurate both buildings on 3 October, he said, according to the report.
The dispute involves two public facilities developed by the municipal corporation: the sports complex in the Bolinj area of Virar and the theatre at Majethia in Nalasopara. The political objections centre on whether the buildings are ready for public use and whether the inauguration process has followed the required administrative and ceremonial procedures.
Dubey-Pandit has sought an urgent inquiry into seven issues relating to the proposed programmes. The questions include whether the events have administrative approval, whether fire-safety requirements have been met, whether the buildings have received completion certificates and whether the invitation arrangements comply with government protocol. She has also raised questions about the alleged unauthorised use of municipal funds and equipment.
The legislator said that buildings created with public money are assets belonging to citizens and should not be treated as the private programme of any political party or individual. She called for all legal and administrative procedures to be followed before the facilities are formally opened, the report said.
The immediate issue is whether the municipal administration will provide the requested written clarification before the proposed inauguration date. The available report does not establish whether the corporation has issued a response, granted all relevant approvals, or confirmed that the fire-safety and completion documentation is in place. The next scheduled milestone is the proposed opening of both facilities on 3 October 2026.
