The Katra-Sangaldan rail corridor in Jammu and Kashmir is now fully secured, with comprehensive safety measures in place ahead of the anticipated launch of the Vande Bharat Express.
This development marks a significant milestone in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India via rail. In response to security concerns following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, authorities have conducted a fresh security audit of the 272-kilometre rail track. The audit identified vulnerable areas, particularly beyond Reasi, where the track passes through isolated regions with sparse population. To address these concerns, additional personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been deployed along the entire stretch, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance and patrolling.
Key infrastructure along the route, including the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges, has been fortified with multi-layered security arrangements. These iconic structures, which are among the highest railway bridges in the world, are now under constant CCTV surveillance and are being patrolled 24/7 by GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the Special Operations Group (SOG), are also actively involved in area domination and sanitization tasks to maintain a secure environment. The GRP has established new administrative units to oversee the track’s jurisdiction, including police stations and posts at strategic locations such as Sawlakote, Sangaldan, Banihal, Reasi, Sumber, Dugga, Kheri, and Bakkal. Additionally, a Zonal Signal Centre has been set up at Katra to enhance communication and coordination among security agencies.
Trial runs of the Vande Bharat Express on the Katra-Sangaldan section have been successfully conducted, with all technical and security aspects thoroughly tested. The trains are now ready to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between Katra and Baramulla. The official launch is expected in the coming weeks, pending final approvals. This enhanced security framework not only ensures the safety of passengers but also underscores the commitment to sustainable and equitable transportation solutions in the region. By integrating advanced technology and coordinated efforts among various security agencies, the Katra-Sangaldan rail corridor stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to building resilient and eco-friendly infrastructure.
